Vislanda Visit

The Stewart Milne Timber Systems board of directors, along with John Smith, our Head of Product and Innovation, travelled to Sweden as guests of Vida, one of our key timber suppliers. Vida are the second largest timber provider in Sweden producing 1.8 million cubic metres of timber per year – to put that into context, the average house has 9 cubic metres of timber in it! They have nine sawmills across Sweden and they supply timber across Europe, the USA, North Africa, the Far East and Australia with exports to the UK account for 32% of their business. Whilst our team were in Sweden, Vida announced that they had completed the deal for Canfor, the world’s second biggest timber supplier, to become the major shareholder in their organisation, an exciting move that will clearly strengthen their business.

The purpose of the visit was to see one of the sawmills in Vislanda in operation, whilst commencing the negotiations for our ongoing timber supply for the early part of next year. Discussions went well and we look forward to completing the deal over the coming weeks. The team were hugely impressed with what they saw and it is encouraging to know that our business is held in such high esteem by what is clearly a very capable and scalable part of our supply chain.

Whilst there, the team were also able to say thank you to Jens-Christian Jensen who is retiring and who has been working with our team as a key timber supplier since the late 1980’s. Jens set up Danish Softwood in Scotland over 30 years ago, importing timber into the UK from Scandinavia and Canada before being employed by us as an agent. Jens has worked closely with Vida, and helped set up the importing of timber, along with storage and treatment to service our manufacturing needs. Jens has been a huge supporter of our business over the past 30 years and we wish him a long, happy and healthy retirement.
