Built in a day: a special timber systems project

With the industry-wide skills shortages still impacting contractors across many sectors, offsite construction is a straightforward solution for delivering modern, sustainable homes and buildings both quickly and cost effectively. But don’t just take our word for it, these time-lapse videos below show offsite construction and our market-leading timber systems in action.

BBC DIY SOS - Little Miracles Community Centre

In 2014 Stewart Milne Group and Stewart Milne Timber Systems supported BBC’s Children in Need DIY SOS programme by constructing a brand new community centre for Little Miracles, a parent-led support group and charity for families with children that have additional needs.

Working with the BBC DIY SOS team from concept to delivery, our team designed and manufactured the timber frame for the community centre before delivering it onsite. Once on site, we were able to erect the superstructure of the single story centre within one day and complete the building within three, enabling the centre to open on time while giving Little Miracles a well-insulated and inviting new space to call home.

Eight weeks to high performance accommodation

From May to July 2014, Stewart Milne Timber Systems worked with McGoff & Byrne to design, manufacture and erect the timber systems for 117 two and three bedroom chalets at Butlin’s West lake Chalets at Minehead.  The Stewart Milne Timber Systems team used a fabric first approach to provide accommodation that is energy efficient and sustainable, and was impressively quick to complete. The time-lapse video below shows the speed in which the chalets’ timber systems and integrated stairwells, windows and balconies were erected and weathertight within an 8 week period, enabling follow-on trades to move in and begin work earlier. This helped the client meet its overall build schedule of 54 weeks for completing the entire complex.

From significantly enhanced speed of build to outstanding cost-effectiveness and high performance, the benefits of offsite construction and timber systems are numerous. If you would like to learn how we can value engineer our systems to deliver cost savings and assured performance for your project, or would perhaps like to visit one of our client sites to see this speed of build in action, please get in touch.
